Plastic CNC machining

Allied Metal offers a wide range of metal materials for CNC machining, including: ABS, PEEK, POM, PVC, PTFE (Teflon), PMMA (Acrylic), PET, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, etc.

CNC Machining Plastic Materials

Choosing the right plastic for CNC machining requires consideration of many factors, such as corrosion resistance, machinability, weight and appearance. The plastic you choose is critical to your ultimate success.
CNC plastic machining is the current trend in manufacturing plastic parts and components. Because of the process’ ability to produce uniform, high-precision parts with tight tolerances, Allied Metal offers a wide range of plastics for CNC machining in a variety of industries. Ideal for one-off prototypes and end-user customized parts.

ABS

Excellent impact resistance, high strength, good stiffness, good Paintability and machinability, low cost.popular for prototyping

PEEK

High-performance thermoplastic, very high strength, thermal and chemical resistant. Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, low friction coefficient.

POM

Superior impact and creep resistance, high strength and stiffness, low coefficient, excellent machinability, dimensional stability, low moisture absorption.

PVC

Excellent chemical and weather resistance, good toughness, easy to weld and machine; durable.

PTFE (Teflon)

Extremely low friction; high heat resistance; chemically inert.

PMMA (Acrylic)

Optically transparent; UV resistant; good weatherability; brittle. Transparent rigid plastic often used as a substitute for glass.

Process Selection Of Plastic CNC Machining

Process

Benefits

Limitations

CNC Turning (Lathes)

Produce the parts at a lower cost compared to CNC Milling
High production capabilities

Can only produce cylindrically shaped parts

CNC Milling (3-axis)

Manufacturing parts with simple geometries quickly and precisely and at a low cost

Manual repositioning of workpieces reduces the achievable accuracy

Mill-turning CNC centers

Lower cost than 5-axis CNC machinine.
High production capabilities & design freedom.

Tool access and workpiece clamping design restrictions apply

Indexed 5 Axis (3+2 )

Eliminates the need for manual repositioning.
Produce parts with features that do not line up with one of the main axes quicky and precisely

Higher cost than 3-axis CNC milling

Continuous 5 Axis

Manufacture complex parts with an accuracy that cannot be achieved by any other process.
Produces a very smooth "organic" surface with minimal machining marks.

Highest cost of all CNC machining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plastics machining refers to the fabrication of plastics parts or products by CNC plastics machines. It is a controlled subtractive manufacturing process for cutting raw materials into a desired final size and shape. It involves milling machines, lathes, drill presses, and other CNC machines.

You can make a variety of plastics parts and products with CNC machines, from small bolts and nuts to large automotive, aerospace and defense industry parts and more.
With CNC machines, you can also create plastics artwork through etching and engraving processes.

There is really no fixed cost for plastics CNC machining. The cost range depends largely on factors such as the number of parts to be machined, their construction, materials, processes and tight tolerances.
Although there is no fixed cost reference, there are quite a few ways to reduce the cost of CNC machining, such as choosing the right materials and machining methods.

We offer a variety of surface finish options, please select a finish here: SURFACE FINISHES
