Process Selection Of Metal CNC Machining

Process

Benefits

Limitations

CNC Turning (Lathes)

Produce the parts at a lower cost compared to CNC Milling
High production capabilities

Can only produce cylindrically shaped parts

CNC Milling (3-axis)

Manufacturing parts with simple geometries quickly and precisely and at a low cost

Manual repositioning of workpieces reduces the achievable accuracy

Mill-turning CNC centers

Lower cost than 5-axis CNC machinine.
High production capabilities & design freedom.

Tool access and workpiece clamping design restrictions apply

Indexed 5 Axis (3+2 )

Eliminates the need for manual repositioning.
Produce parts with features that do not line up with one of the main axes quicky and precisely

Higher cost than 3-axis CNC milling

Continuous 5 Axis

Manufacture complex parts with an accuracy that cannot be achieved by any other process.
Produces a very smooth "organic" surface with minimal machining marks.

Highest cost of all CNC machining.

What factors should be considered when selecting metal materials for CNC machining?

For metal CNC machining, choosing the right material is critical to the final product. With the right material, it is possible to balance usage, cost and machinability. Here are some factors to consider when selecting materials for CNC machining:

CNC Machining Time

The type of metal chosen usually determines the time required for machining. Choosing a metal with low machinability will greatly increase CNC machining time, while a metal with high machinability (such as aluminum) will not. In addition, the longer the machining time, the more expensive the manufacturing process will be.
Another factor that determines machining time is the complexity of the part. a CNC machine will take longer to machine a complex part than a simple one, which adds to the cost of CNC machining.

Strength and Environmental Requirements of CNC Machined Parts

The purpose of the CNC machined part is another factor that determines the choice of metal. For example, high strength metals such as steel alloys are preferable to copper when manufacturing parts that are subjected to significant pressure and loads.
On the other hand, titanium may be ideal in situations where the end product should have similar strength to steel but without the weight of steel, such as in aircraft manufacturing.
In addition, the environment in which the part will operate is another factor in determining the metal used to manufacture the part.

Surface Treatment and Post-treatment of CNC Machined Metals

The type of metal chosen also determines the finishing and post-processing of the machined part. For example, soft metals or hard metals with low machinability often have machining marks and burrs that finishing and post-processing help remove.
While finishing and post-processing can improve the appearance of metal parts, they also increase the cost of machining. However, knowing what finishing and post-processing is required can make it easier to select the right metal for metal part manufacturing. In most cases, if a high quality surface finish is important, then it will be a metal with high manufacturability.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is really no fixed cost for metal CNC machining. The cost range depends largely on factors such as the number of parts to be machined, their construction, materials, processes and tight tolerances.
Although there is no fixed cost reference, there are quite a few ways to reduce the cost of CNC machining, such as choosing the right materials and machining methods.

Metal machining refers to the fabrication of metal parts or products by CNC metal machines. It is a controlled subtractive manufacturing process for cutting raw materials into a desired final size and shape. It involves milling machines, lathes, drill presses, and other CNC machines.

You can make a variety of metal parts and products with CNC machines, from small bolts and nuts to large automotive, aerospace and defense industry parts and more.
With CNC machines, you can also create metal artwork through etching and engraving processes.

Our standard lead time for CNC parts is 3-7 business days; however, lead time may be affected by part size, material availability, order quantity, and other factors. Please contact our Customer Success Manager or email quote@alliedcn.com for more information.
